Four Police officers receive cash prizes for their exemplary conduct beyond duty

Defence Secretary Maj. Gen. (Retd) Kamal Gunaratne awarded cash prizes and commendation certificates to four Police officers and a civilian today (June 25) for their excellent performance in line of duty.  

The cash prizes were awarded at a ceremony held at the Defence Ministry’s main auditorium this evening.  

Officer-In-Charge of the Thalawakele Police Station Chief Inspector (CI), Ruwan Fernando and Police Constable (PC) Selvaraj Kandaruban attached to the same Police Station received prizes for having risked their lives on May 31, 2020, to save the life of a woman who had fallen into a tributary of the Kotmale reservoir.  

Meanwhile, a financial contribution was also made to the family of Hamid Rizwan, who lost his life while attempting to save the life of a 22-year-old woman, who was rescued by the two Police officers on May 31,2020. Sivan Mary Theresa, spouse of Hamid Rizwan received a cash cheque worth of Rs. 500,000 at the event.    

CI Varuni Bogahawatte and PC P.G.M.P Karunathilake also received cash prizes and certificates of commendation for a heroic deed in assisting the arrest of a suspect along with Rs. 7,780,226 robbed from the Colombo National Hospital on June 9, 2020.

In addition, W.W.A.P Fernando, a Health employee at the National Hospital was also awarded with a cash prize recognizing his exemplary effort in assisting the Police to arrest the suspect involved in the cash robbery at the Colombo National hospital.
