Defence Secretary reviews ‘Deegawapi Stupa’ restoration progress
December 16, 2020Defence Secretary Maj. Gen. (Retd) Kamal Gunaratne reviewed the progress of the Deegawapi Stupa restoration while convening a meeting with the Presidential Task Force (PTF) members and the stakeholder institutions at the Defence Ministry today (Dec 16).
The Defence Secretary and Chairperson of ‘Archaeological Heritage Management PTF for Eastern Province Maj. Gen. Gunaratne chaired the meeting.
Stressing into a few key features of his concern at the meeting, Maj. Gen. Gunaratne reviewed the avenues of manufacturing of Standard Bricks for Stupa restoration, reassembly of Sacred Stone-Paved Precincts (Salapathala Maluwa), refurbishment of Alms Giving Hall (Dana Shalawa) and the setting of Pilgrims Rest.
Further raising concerns into the panoramic ancient view, he also discussed about the tree planting and beautification arrangements with PTF members.
The recording of the progress regarding the entrusted tasks to the Sri Lanka Army, Civil Security Department (CSD) and the Department of Archaeology was also under discussion.
Venerable Maha Sanga, Director General of Archaeology Prof. Senerath Dissanayake, CSD Deputy Director Rear Admiral (Retd) Udeni Serasinghe, Senior DIG Deshabandu Tennakoon, Ministry of Buddha Sasana, Cultural and Religious Affairs Secretary Prof. Kapila Gunawardena, Surveyor General A.L.S.C. Perera, Land Commissioner General Chandra Herath, PTF Secretary Jeewanthi Senanayaka, Derana Media Network Chairperson Dilith Jayaweera and Defence Ministry Officials were present at the meeting.
