International virtual symposium on Multi-Hazard Early Warning and Disaster Risk Reduction concluded at BMICH

International virtual symposium on Multi-Hazard Early Warning and Disaster Risk Reduction (MHEW and DRR: 2020) held for three days concluded yesterday (Dec 16) at  Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH).

Secretary of State Ministry of National Security, Home Affairs and Disaster Management and Secretary of Defence Maj. Gen. (Retd) Kamal Gunaratne attended the closing ceremony as the Chief Guest.

A large number of home and international organizations,  professionals and academia,  involved in the field of disaster management participated through the virtual platform, at the symposium which  commenced on Dec 14 .

It was held in collaboration between the Ministry of Defence, Disaster Management Centre, Sri Lanka and Global Disaster Resilience Centre, University of Huddersfield, UK with several other partner universities, partner UN agencies, JICA, ADPC, and other partner agencies.

The Colombo Declaration of MHEW and DRR:2020 was adopted on 16 December and circulated among the stakeholders.

During the event, the Defence Secretary awarded the prizes to the winners of the Art Competition organized by the Disaster Management Centre, Sri Lanka.

Further, signifying the occasion, Director General of the Disaster Management Centre  Maj. Gen. (Retd) Sudantha Ranasinghe presented a plaque to the Defence Secretary.

Officials from tri forces and the police and other stakeholder agencies were also present at the closing ceremony.
