Sri Lanka Navy troops under the Northern and Northwestern Naval Commands carried out several programmes recently where more than 1000 mangrove saplings were planted in identified locations in lagoons areas. The programme was conducted in view of the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem.

The programme carried out on Thursday (26) saw mangrove plants being planted in littoral areas in the North and Northwestern Naval regions with the participation of Naval officers, other ranks, students and local residents.

The Navy in its commitment to protect marine resources and environment has so far planted over 100,000 mangrove plants in many coastal areas in the island.
