24th Death Anniversary of the late Lieutenant General Kobbekaduwa

The 24th death anniversary of Late Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa, one of the country's renowned war veterans is scheduled to be held today (8th Monday, August 2016). According to army media sources several memorial programmes have been organized by his Regiment Sri Lanka Armoured Corps (SLAC) and his spouse, Mrs Laly Kobbekaduwa in view of his 24th death anniversary.

Late Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa together with Major General Wijaya Wimalarathne, Rear Admiral Mohan Jayamaha, Lieutenant Colonel H.R Stephen, Lieutenant Colonel G.H. Ariyarathne, Lieutenant Colonel Y N Palipana, Commander Asanga Lankathilaka, Lieutenant Colonel Nalin de Alwis, Lieutenant Commander C.B. Wijepura and Private W.J Wickremasinghe were victims of a land mine attack at Araly Point, Kayts in Jaffna on 8th August 1992.

Lt Gen Kobbekaduwa joined the Sri Lanka Army on 25th May 1960. After completing basic training at the Army Training centre, he left for the Sandhurst Royal Military Academy, UK for further training. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant of the Sri Lanka Armoured Corps, on 03rd August 1962. Lieutenant General Kobbekaduwa was a renowned military officer who was instrumental in achieving victory in many battles during the terrorist conflict.
