Army troops continue with relief operations

[December 04 2017]

With the weather showing signs of improving, relief operations carried out by Army troops are still continuing in many parts of the island. According to Army media, hundreds of troops of the Security Force Headquarters - West (SFHQ-West) and the Security Force Headquarters - Central (SFHQ-C) are still involved in relief activities in many worst affected areas.

In the Matara District, troops were able to prevent a possible breach of the Nilwala river near Kadduwa in Malimbada on Saturday (02nd December). Troops placed sand bags along a stretch of the river bank and also renovated most vulnerable points in order to prevent further deterioration.

Meanwhile, troops under the SFHQ-West in coordination with government authorities provided support to clean debris, including fallen trees in many parts of the Colombo city.

Troops of the SFHQ-C provided assistance to clear the railway line between Ohiya and Diyatalawa railway stations. They also provided assistance to clean and repair damaged water pumping machines in Ellegama south in Diyatalawa in coordination with Water Board authorities.

In addition, 10-man Army teams are working with Ceylon Electricity Board authorities round the clock to restore power supply in several areas in the Kalutara District.
