Fire and Rescue Unit for 'Dalada Maligawa'

A fully equipped Fire Tender was ceremonially handed
over to the Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Tooth) by the Sri Lanka Air
Force, today (08). According to Air Force media, the vehicle was handed
over to the Diyawadana Nilame Pradeep Nilanga Dela by the Commander of
the Air Force Air Marshal Kapila Jayampathy at a ceremony held in Kandy,
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also signed at
the occasion to establish a Fire and Rescue Unit at the temple during
the occasion. The project for this purpose was mooted after a request
was made by the temple authorities.
The first of the three phases consists of a thorough
survey of the existing systems and the revamping of the defective
hydrant systems and pumps, upgrading of the first aid fire appliances,
conducting of awareness, training and the introduction of Standard
Operating Procedures. The second phase of the project consists of a
comprehensive fire and rescue plan for the temple and its environs.
The final phased project will involve a comprehensive
project to establish detection and flooding system utilizing the latest
appliances and technologies in fire prevention.
