INSSSL conducts special lecture by Japanese scholar

The Institute of Security Studies Sri Lanka (INSSSL)
hosted a public lecture titled 'Changing China-US power balance & role
of Japan- Sri Lanka & India Cooperation' by Dr. Satoru Nagao, a Japanese
scholar on Wednesday (15th February). The lecture was held at the INSSSL
Auditorium at 'Suhurupaya' in Battaramulla.
The lecture was organized in order to educate the
audience of the current national and international political and
security situations in the changing geo-political and social sphere.
During his lecture Dr. Nagao explained how Sri Lanka centered Indo -
Japanese cooperation should stand and the role of these three countries
in the current international geopolitical environment and change of
balance of power between China and the United States. At the end of the
lecture a question and answer session was also held.
The Director General of the INSSSL Mr. Asanga
Abegoonasekara also presented a memento to Dr. Nagao as mark of
appreciation during the occasion. The event was attended by scholars,
senior tri forces officers, special invitees and media personnel.
Dr. Satoru Nagao is a Research Fellow at The Tokyo
Foundation, Lecturer in Security at the Department of Political Studies
at the Faculty of Law, Gakushuin University, and Research Fellow at the
Japan Forum for Strategic Studies. He is also a Senior Fellow at the
Institute of National Security Studies Sri Lanka, Senior Research Fellow
of Indian Military Review and teaching at Aoyama-Gakuin University and
Komazawa University as a lecturer. Dr. Nagao was awarded his PhD by
Gakushuin University in 2011 for his thesis titled "India's Military
Strategy", the first such research thesis on this topic in Japan.
Gakushuin University is a premier institute from which members of the
Japanese Imperial Family have also graduated.
Dr. Nagao was a visiting scholar at the Center for
Strategic & International Studies, in Washington D.C. Furthermore, he
was a Research Fellow at the Ocean Policy Research Foundation in Tokyo,
was a post-doctoral fellow at the Research Institute for Oriental
Cultures at Gakushuin University, and a Security Analyst at the Ministry
of Foreign Affairs (MOFA). He was also a First Lieutenant of the Japan
Ground Self Defense Forces (Japanese Army). Dr. Nagao has authored
numerous books and articles on security issues and he also writes for a
column on related topics at Nikkei Business, the journal of one of
Japan's leading newspapers.
The Institute of National Security Studies (INSSSL) is
the premiere national defence think tank of Sri Lanka under the Ministry
of Defence. Established to understand the security environment and to
work with government to craft evidence based policy options and
strategies for debate and discussion to ensure national security. The
institute regularly conducts panel discussion and lectures on a broad
array of topics.
