Naval initiative provides access to safe drinking water to Indigenous Community

[November 29 2018]

Extending its community welfare services to the local Indigenous Community (Veddah), the Sri Lanka Navy has installed a Reverse Osmosis (RO) water treatment plant in Dambana, recently.

This RO plant installed at the historical indigenous village in the Ampara District was declared open by Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Sirimevan Ranasinghe on 24th November (2018). Incidentally, this is the 534th Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant to be produced and installed by the Research and Development Unit of the Sri Lanka Navy.

The Navy has installed RO plants in mostly rural areas across the country where access to safe drinking water is limited. So far thousands of families and school children in areas prone to Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) have benefitted from the Navy's initiative to provide much needed safe drinking water for their daily requirements, free of charge.

The Navy embarked on this ambitious project in December, 2015, initially funded by its own personnel. Now the project is ably supported by the Presidential Task Force on Prevention of Chronic Kidney Disease and other state and private sector entities.

Chief of the Indigenous Community, Wishwa Keerthi Wanaspathi, Uruwarige Wannila Aththo and Commander Southeastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral Ruwan Perera were also present at the opening ceremony.
