Navy's Community Development Programme reaches milestone

Sri Lanka Navy had initiated a number of community welfare measures to uplift the living standards of the people. The development and installing of water treatment plants (Reverse Osmosis Plants) is one of the programmes that has immensely benefitted the people especially those in rural communities.

The project saw its birth in December 2015. Under a concept of the Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne, Navy's Research and Development Unit produced and installed two Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants in Poonewa and Kadawathrambewa on 22nd December 2015. Within the past one year Navy has produced and installed 71 RO plants in areas prone chronic kidney disease. As a result of this project more than 33,000.families and over 26,000 students have been provided with access to safe drinking water.

The project commenced initially with financial contribution from naval personnel which was pooled into the Naval Social Responsibility Fund to be utilized for community oriented projects. The Presidential Task Force on Prevention of Chronic Kidney Disease provides financial backing for the project with a number of state and private sector entities also providing support.

Navy has also deployed maintenance teams for the continuous upkeep of theses RO plants in order to provide uninterrupted safe drinking water for the general public. In addition special awareness programmes are also carried to educate the public on Chronic Kidney Disease among the agricultural communities. The Navy's initiative in this regard is widely appreciated and recognized as one of the most effective community CSR projects encompassing a wide area of the country.
