Navy installs 86th RO plant at Thirappane

Sri Lanka Navy has installed several more of its Reverse Osmosis (RO) water treatment plants in a number of locations with the dawn of the New Year. The RO plant installed at Mahanama Maha Vidyalaya in Thirappane was declared open on Wednesday (04th January 2017). This will be 86th plant to be produced and installed by the Navy.

This RO plant will serve the drinking water needs of over 1200 students and 75 teachers of the school. In addition 750 families in the village will also be able to draw safe drinking water from this facility. The plant produced by the Navy's Research and Development Unit was set up with sponsorship of Firefly Mission Singapore Institute.

In addition two RO plants were installed at the Anuradhapura Central College and at the 'Track 3' village in Rajanganaya on Tuesday (03rd January) with financial provisions from the Presidential Task Force on Prevention of kidney diseases. The RO plant installed at Mahasen Maha Vidyalaya in Padaviya was declared open on Monday (02nd January) while another such water treatment was also declared open at the District Hospital in Mathugama, recently.

So far Sri Lanka Navy has installed 86 RO plants in parts of the country where a high prevalence of Chronic Kidney disease is recorded. This community welfare initiative of the Navy has provided access to more than 40,600 families and 34,200 school children to clean and safe drinking water. The project to build RO plants got off the ground in December 2015 under the directions of the Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne. and with financial contributions from naval personnel.
