Navy produced water treatment plants installed in Vavuniya and Galenbindunuwewa

Two water treatment plants installed at the Vavuniya Police Station and at Kokawewa village in Galenbindunuwewa were declared open on Sunday (20th November). The two Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants were produced by the Navy's Research and Development Unit with financial assistance from the Presidential Task Force on Prevention of Chronic Kidney Disease.

The new RO plant at the Vavuniya Police station was ceremonially declared open by the Minister of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine, Hon. Dr Rajitha Senaratne with the presence of Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Eng. Karunasena Hettiarachchi. Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne, Project Director of Presidential Task Force on Prevention of Chronic Kidney Disease, Mr. Asela Iddawela, senior naval and police officers were also present at the occasion.

According to navy media sources each of these RO plants will be able to satisfy the drinking water requirements of over 500 police personnel of the Vavuniya Police Station and 490 families in Kokawewa village. So far navy has installed 54 RO plants around the island including at schools and remote villages enabling thousands of students and families to acquire pure drinking water. Navy also has produced mobile RO plants which can supply purified water to inaccessible villages in regions which are prone to chronic kidney disease.
