President graces Special Forces Passing Out
President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces,
Maithripala Sirisena was the Chief Guest at the Passing Out ceremony of
the Sri Lanka Army Special Forces held today (09th Monday, April). The
colouful ceremony was conducted at the Special Forces Training School in
Maduru Oya this morning.
Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Mr. Kapila
Waidyaratne PC was also present at the occasion.
Seven Officers and 189 Other Rank personnel who
underwent a rigorous nine month training course joined their brethren to
serve the motherland at today's Passing Out ceremony.
The President was received by the Commander of the
Army, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, upon his arrival at the
venue and was accorded a Guard of Honour by the Special Forces (SF)
troops. Later the President inspected the Guard. The badges which were
flown in during the ceremony were pinned on the new SF personnel by the
President, Secretary Waidyaratne and the Chief of Defence Staff.
Making a brief address the President reminded the
young men in uniform of the importance of maintaining discipline. He
also paid tribute to the sacrifices made by the security forces during
Special awards and certificates were presented by the
President to those who had performed well during the course. A highlight
of the event was the special display of para jumping, Angampora and
other martial arts, battle ground and combat fighting techniques and
cultural presentations by the troops.
After the ceremony the President visited the Osu Uyana
(herbal garden) at the Training School and planted a tree to mark his
visit there. He also made it a point to interact with the parents of the
SF personnel who had come to witness the Passing Out ceremony.
The Special Forces, is one of the elite units of the
Army. Its members have proven their mettle during the final years of the
Humanitarian Operations, particularly its Long Range Reconnaissance
Patrol troops were much feared by the terrorists.
Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne,
Commander of the Army, senior Army officers and a large number of family
members of the SF personnel were also present at the occasion.
