Sri Lanka celebrates 69th Independence Day

President and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed
Forces Maithripala Sirisena was the Chief Guest at the main ceremony of
the 69th Independence Day celebrations held at the Galle Face Green in
Colombo today morning (4th Saturday, February 2017).
Prime Minister Hon. Ranil Wickremesinghe, State
Minister of Defence Hon. Ruwan Wijewardene and Secretary to the Ministry
of Defence Eng. Karunasena Hettiarachchi were also present at the
The event commenced with President hoisting the
national flag. Thereafter the Jayamangala gatha was sung to usher
blessings to the nation. A two minutes silence was also observed in
memory of the fallen War Heroes.
Subsequently, a guard of honour was accorded to the
President followed by the 21-Gun Salute.
Speaking at the event President stated that, in the
process to development, it is necessary to achieve ethnic reconciliation
and religious coexistence, which are already considered as priorities by
the government. President highlighted that, the nation is comprised with
strong, educated, talented and intelligent people, who have the ability,
knowledge and resources in building the nation.
He also said that, it is important to remember the
brave war heroes who sacrificed their lives and limbs to protect the
motherland from the L. T. T. E. terrorism throughout 30 years. He
pointed out that, we should remember the lessons we learnt from the past
in which about 100,000 people lost their lives.
President also expressed his gratitude towards those
who contributed for the 69th national independence celebration.
Around 8000 personnel representing Army, Navy, Air
Force, Police, Civil Security Department and National Cadet Corps
participated for the annual parade. Navy and Air Force also made their
sail-past and the fly-past at the bordering seas off Galle Face green
amidst the parade. The parade also included a special parachute display
and vehicle parade.
Accordingly, 183 officers and 3973 soldiers from Army,
32 officers and 878 sailors from Navy, 70 officers and 1055 airmen from
Air Force, 18 officers and 470 policeman, 37 officers and 496 personnel
from STF, 24 officers and 684 other ranks from Civil Security Department
and more than100 personnel from National Cadet Corps participated for
Sri Lanka Navy accorded a 25-gun salute to the nation
auspiciously on twelve noon in parallel with the 69th Independence Day
ceremony at the Lighthouse, Port of Colombo.
Religious Dignitaries, former President Chandrika
Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, Hon. Speaker of the parliament, Ministers,
Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, Chief Justice, Parliamentarians,
Provincial Governors, Chief Ministers, Foreign Envoys, senior states
official, CDS, Tri-Forces Commanders, IGP, Director General of CSD,
State Officials and a large gathering of distinguished invitees were
present at the event.
