Troops assist relief activities as rains continue

[October 09 2018]

With the prevailing inclement weather showing no signs of improvement many parts of the country continue to experience heavy rainfall. According to the latest weather forecasts issued by the Met Department the prevailing showery condition is expected to continue in the Southwestern part of the island. It also predicts heavy rain fall to about 100 mm at places in the Western, Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces and in Galle, Matara Districts.

Sri Lanka Army and Navy troops have been mobilized to assist in relief operations in coordination with the Disaster Management Centre. Army personnel are involved in flood relief activities in Kelaniya, Udugama, Pitigala, Nagoda, Welipenna, Horawala, Bulathsinhala, Palinganuwara, Walalla, Yatadolawatte, Puttalama and Kelanimulla areas. Army troops have deployed boats, armoured tanks (WMZ) and Iron Horse vehicles to attend to the emergency needs of the affected people. Flood victims are also provided with cooked food by the troops in addition to the other relief measures.

Meanwhile, Army troops took preventive measure to block a leakage in the Payankulam tank bund which provides water to Palampiddi area. Timely action by the troops prevented a possible disaster as the water level of the tank was fast increasing.

According to the Disaster Management Centre more than 12,440 families have been affected while 9 fatalities have been reported due to floods and related incidents. 19 people have been injured and one person is reported missing. More than 5,800 people have been evacuated to safer locations. Increased water levels in several reservoirs including, Rajanganaya, Polgolla and Laxapana have caused spill gates to be opened.
