Underprivileged communities in Mullaittivu receive donations worth millions

Underprivileged communities in Mullaittivu were beneficiaries of a Sri Lanka Army initiated welfare project that saw the distribution of milch cows, wheel chairs, agricultural tools and school accessories worth several millions rupees. According to Army media, the ceremony to distribute these incentives was held on the Poson Poya Day (27).

Accordingly, 100 dairy cows were distributed among 100 selected underprivileged families while 50 wheelchairs were presented to disable people and remote hospitals in the region. In addition 150 gift parcels of school books and accessories, each worth about Rs.1000.00 and 150 mammoty blades were also distributed among selected students and farmers respectively, during the ceremony.

The donation, worth more than Rs. 5.5 million was made possible by the Security Force Headquarters - Mullaittivu (SFHQ-MLT) through the magnanimity of the Embilipitiya Sri Bodhi Raja Foundation of Ven (Dr) Omalpe Sobhitha Nayaka Thero.

A large number of community assistance programmes are carried out by troops in Mullaittivu to uplift the living standards of people in the region which has been identified as one of the most backward districts. Free health clinics, distribution of medicine and nutrients, school accessories, school uniforms, educational scholarships, push bicycles, spectacles, vegetable and fruit seeds and tree saplings, roofing sheets, home utensils and etc. are some of the initiatives taken by the troops to provide relief to the deserving people in the region. They have also taken measures to dig wells for drinking and irrigation purposes of these communities as well.

The donation ceremony was graced by the Governor of the Northern Province, Hon. Reginald Cooray. Ven (Dr) Omalpe Sobhitha Nayaka Thero, Chief Sangha Nayaka of the Southern Province in Sri Lanka Ramagnna Nikaya and Chief Sangha Nayaka of Singapore, Commander, Security Forces Mullaittivu Major General Dushyantha Rajaguru, senior state officials, representatives of the donor agency, military officers and a large number of people in the region were also present at the occasion.
