Strong winds and heavy rainfall predicted to continue

The sudden change in the weather condition over the island is likely to continue further. According to the weather forecast of the Met Department issued at noon today (18 July 2019), the prevailing showery and windy conditions are expected to continue over the South-western part and in Central hilly areas of the island and over the North-western, Western, South-western and Southern sea areas till Saturday (20) while cloudy skies can be expected over most parts of the island.

Strong gusty winds over the island particularly in Western, Southern, Central, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces can be expected.

Showers or thunder showers are predicted in the Sabaragamuwa, Central, Western, Southern and North-Western provinces. Heavy rains of over 100 mm are also expected in the Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Kalutara, Galle, Colombo, Gampaha and Matara districts. Satellite images show the island blanked by heavy clouds.

Meanwhile the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) has issued flood and landslide warnings. The National Building Research Organization has issued landslide warnings in the Ratnapura, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Kegalle, Kaluthara, Matara and Galle districts. The fishing community has also been cautioned against venturing into sea as heavy wind, sometimes up to 70-80 kmph is expected to blow over the seas. It also has advised coastal communities in Puttalam to Hambantota through Colombo and Galle to be wary of rough waves and coastal inundation. Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre advisory indicates that waves may rise up to 2.5 to 3.5 meters.
