A workshop on 'Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported
Fishing' was conducted at the Naval and Maritime Academy in Trincomalee
on 24th (March). According to Navy media the workshop, organized by the
United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization was attended by a Supreme
Court judge, a Court of Appeal Judge, female Judges, Judges from the Judges'
Institute of Sri Lanka, Attorney General's Department, officials from
the Ministry of Fisheries and the NARA.
In addition, Dr. Pio Manoa, of the Legal Office of the
United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome and Ms Zoe
Scanlon, Senior Legal Adviser of the Office of International Law of the
Australian Government were also present at the occasion. The
participants were provided with a comprehensive presentation on Sri
Lanka's perspective on IUU fishing focusing on the destructive bottom
trawling fishing. Subsequently they were all taken to sea onboard a Navy
vessel to get first-hand experience on how offenders who involve in IUU
fishing are apprehended by the Navy.
