Educational incentives for children of Army families
January 15, 2019The Sri Lanka Army presented 701 children of its personnel with educational assistance including scholarships, medals, laptops etc. worth Rs. 14.2 million during a ceremony held at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) on Friday (11 January). According to Army media, this is an annual welfare programme carried out by the Army with a view to provide educational assistance to the children of service personnel.
The ceremony saw school going children of Officers and Other Ranks serving in the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF) receiving educational incentives from the Commander of the Army Lieutenant, General Mahesh Senanayake, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
The beneficiary children include students who had excelled at public exams including the Grade 5 Scholarship and G.C.E (O/L) examinations and also those qualified for university entrance after the G.C.E (A/L) examination.
Accordingly, 248 children who had passed the Grade 5 examination received Rs. 15,000.00, each and a school bag while 418 children who had excelled at the G.C.E (O/L) got Rs 25,000.00, Rs 20,000.00 and Rs 15,000.00 each according to their results. 35 university entry qualified students received Rs 50,000.00 each and a gold medal.
In addition, 10 Officers selected to read for the psc degree at the Defence Services Command and Staff College were also presented with new laptops.
During the ceremony, a Hearing Test Machine, Eye Exam Machine and a Physiotherapy Equipment were presented to the 'Senehasa' Education Resource Research and Information Centre (SERRIC) for the use of children with special needs there by the President, Army Seva Vanitha Unit, Mrs. Chandrika Senanayake.
Senior Army officers including the Chief of Staff, Commandant, SLAVF and representatives of sponsor institutions were also present at the occasion.
