More than 1200 acres released in the North
January 22, 2019A total of 1201.88 acres of state and private land used by Army in Mullaittivu, Kilinochchi, Jaffna and Wanni districts, including Udayarkattu, and three other Army farms were released on Monday (21 January). According to Army media, the documents relating to the release of land were handed over to the President Maithripala Sirisena during a ceremony held at Vidyananda Maha Vidyalaya in Mulliyawalai, Mullaitivu. The President after accepting the documents from the Commander of the Army handed them in turn to the Governors and District Secretaries for onward implementation of the land release.
The released land includes 972 acres of state land in Kilinochchi, 120 acres of state land in Mullaittivu, 46.11 acres of state land in Jaffna and Wanni and 63.77 acres of private land in Jaffna and Wanni.
The President was in Mullaithivu to declare the National Drug Prevention Week. The main ceremony was held at the Vidyananda Vidyalaya.
Meanwhile, Army troops in the region also joined in this national effort by distributing awareness leaflets on drugs among the students of 70 school in the region. They also supported the 'Earth Watchman' mega tree planting project of planting 2 million trees island-wide in parallel to the 2019 Cricket World Cup, launched by the President at the Agriculture Technology Institute, Kilinochchi on the same day.
