Police cop who thwarted National Hospital robbery dies in a road accident

The Police Constable, who thwarted the Rs. 7.9 million robbery, at the Colombo National Hospital (CNH) died this morning while he was receiving treatment at the CNH’s ICU, where he was admitted after he met with an accident on June 11.

Sithum Duleeks Alahapperuma, a 22-year-old PC, a resident of Ginidamana, Nelumwewa in Polonnaruwa, was severely injured when a defender crashed on to his motorbike at Thummulla junction, Bambalapitiya, the Police said.

Sithum, who was attached to the State Intelligence Service (SIS), was brave enough to follow the cash robber, who is a doctor armed with a pistol (which later found to be a fake one), along with one of colleagues and overpowered the culprit with the assistance of a lady Chief Inspector of Police on June 9.
