Over 6,000 suspects arrested for narcotic related offences during two weeks
June 21, 2020Over 6,000 suspects have been arrested in special anit-narcotic operations conducted by the Police Special Task Force (STF) and Police intelligence units, which have intensified their search operations during the past two weeks ending from June 20 midnight.
According to the Police, 6,420 suspects with 5 kg of heroin and 217 kg of cannabis have been arrested during the period starting from 6 a.m. June 06.
In addition, 6 suspects have been arrested in separate incidents for possessing illegal arms including 7 hand grenades.
The Police have also arrested 5,574 persons involved in illicit liquor brewing and selling during the same period. Meanwhile, over 5,000 warranted suspects who had been evading arrest were also taken into custody, the Police said.
On June 16, Defence Secretary Maj. Gen. (Retd) Kamal Gunaratne during a press briefing assured to form a society free of drugs menace, underworld activities, organized crimes and extortion for all communities to live in a just and safe country in the future.
