Two prison guards interdicted for supporting convicted drug dealers

June 22, 2020

Two prison guards who were found extensively supporting and involved with inmates convicted for drug offences at the Matara and Mahara prisons have been interdicted.

The Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya said the prison guards, alleged of providing mobile phones to inmates, were handed over to the Police for further investigations.

According to Upuldeniya, the prison guard at the Mahara prison was caught red-handed by prison officials while attempting to hand over three mobile phones to an inmate while the other prison guard at Matara was also arrested while attempting to commit a similar offence.
Defence Secretary Maj. Gen. (Retd) Kamal Gunaratne recently cautioned the prisons officials to refrain from getting involved in corruption and abetting the convicted underworld criminals in prisons.
