Prison officials sweep cells for illegal items; recover haul of mobile phones

Continuous search operations conducted in the Welikada Magazine Prison during the past few days since June 27, Prison officials uncovered a haul of illegal items including 16 mobile phones and accessories.

According to Prisons Commissioner (Administration) Chandana Ekanayake, thorough searches were carried out in the prison cells following information received on clandestine drug rackets operated from the prison.

One internet router, few mobile chargers, SIM cards and cell-phone batteries were also among the items found during the search operations, he said.   

Meanwhile, the Police Special Task Force (STF) recovered some mobile phones and unauthorized equipment from the cell of notorious drug dealer ‘Kanjipani Imran’, detained at the Boossa Prison.

On June 16, Defence Secretary Maj. Gen. (Retd) Kamal Gunaratne assured to form a society free of drug menace, underworld activities, organized crimes and extortion for all communities to live in a just and safe country in the future.
