Defence Secretary hands over house built for disabled soldier
July 04, 2020Defence Secretary Maj. Gen. (Retd) Kamal Gunaratne handed over a house constructed for a disabled soldier in Gokarella in Kurunegala today (July 4).
Corporal Mahinda Edirisooriya, 48, received the keys to his new house by Maj. Gen. Kamal Gunaratne.
The construction work of the house was undertaken by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA).
Edirisooriya had served in the SL EX’s 2nd Sri Lanka National Guard (2SLNG) since 1990. In 1992, whilst conducting a route clearing at Palampattar in Trincomalee, he sustained severe injuries following an anti-personal (AP) mine explosion. The incident resulted in losing his both arms and eye sight.
Former Army Chief and the Chairperson of the Sri Lanka Port Authority Gen. (Retd) Daya Ratnayake, Acting Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army Lt. Gen. Shavendra Silva and Rear Admiral (Retd) Sarath Weerasekara were also present at the occasion.
