Navy rescues a whale

Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) recused a stranded whale shark  and guided it into the deep sea which was sited close to Ninthaur beach in Kalmunai yesterday (July 06).

Identifying the species as ‘Rhincodon Typus’ nearing extinction, the South-Eastern Naval Command has guided the shark into the deep sea with the assistance of a naval ship on patrol in the area, under the directives of South-Eastern Naval Area Commander Rear Admiral Senarath Wijesooriya.

Belonging to one of the largest species in the world, this shark’s weight is about 9,000 kilos and 9 meters in its length.

The SLN says, according to the United Nation’s Convention on the Law of the Sea, sharks of this species are mandatory to be conserved.
