July 10 - Marks the 13th year of liberating Thoppigala

July 10, 2020

The Baron's Cap and Kudumbimalai, which is known as Thoppigala, a large rock standing at 1,753 feet (534 m) above sea level, was captured by the soldiers of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) announcing the end of the now defunct LTTE’s stronghold in the East.

Liberating Thoppigala was not an easy walk for the SLA soldiers, including its elite Commandos as the LTTE domination had highly fortified bunker lines and several minor camps since mid-1990.

After fierce fighting in Narakkamulla and adjoining areas in Thoppigala, with 50 Commandos destroying all bunkers and killing several terrorists, had liberated the entire Eastern terrain from LTTE on July 10, 2007

The then Government, under the leadership of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa had vowed to continue the military thrust into LTTE domination to sweep terrorism from the country.

Liberating Thoppigala became the first sign, after many years, that a rigorous and continued military mission was in the pipeline and the LTTE domination was started to shrink in military mission that was progressing inch by inch.
