Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne assumes office as the 24th Navy Commander

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has appointed Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne as the 24th  Sri Lanka Navy Commander, while promoting him to the three star rank of Vice Admiral with effect from today (July 15).

Vice Admiral Ulugetenne was the Chief of Staff of the Navy prior to his appointment as the Navy Commander.

Following his school education at the prestigious Royal College, Colombo, he joined the SLN as an Officer Cadet in the intake 13  in 1985 and completed basic training at the Naval and Maritime Academy, Trincomalee.

He is a graduate of the Joint Services Command and Staff College, Colombo and a recipient of Master of Arts Degree in Defence Studies from the King's College, London.

He holds a Master's Degree in Maritime Policy from the Wollongong University, Australia and has been awarded a MPhil in Defence and Strategic Studies from the Madras University, India.

During his illustrious 35-years long career, he has held  a number of prestigious appointments including training, administration and operations.

He has been decorated with Rana Sura Padakkama (RSP) twice, Vishista Seva Vibhushanaya (VSV) and Uththama Seva Padakkama (USP) for his exemplary conduct and bravery and Deshaputhra Medal for sustaining injuries during operations.

Vice Admiral Ulugetenne is the successor to former Navy Commander Admiral Piyal De Silva on his retirement.
