Prison Sergeant arrested for abetting drug rackets

The Police have arrested a Sergeant attached to the Colombo Remand Prison for abetting drug racketeers during a raid conducted in Peliyagoda on Monday (July 27).

The 36-year-old suspect was arrested by the Western Province (North) Crimes Division led by Senior DIG  of Western Province Deshabandu Tennakoon.

According to the Police, the arrested prison Sergeant had provided security for transporting large sums of money, which was the income from drug smuggling, in a car during curfew that was imposed to contain the spread of the coronavirus outbreak.  

The Police said the prison Sergeant was also engaged in the racket together with another suspect called Rohan Pradeep, who was arrested and detained over his involvement in handling the drug money of the notorious underworld criminal ‘Kosgoda Tharaka’, who is now in Boossa Prison for hardcore criminals.

The Peliyagoda Police are conducting further investigations.   

Meanwhile, the Police have also taken the main suspect who threw several parcels of drugs over the Welikada Magazine Prison walls, into custody, yesterday.  

According to the Police the suspect was in possession of heroin, four mobile phones, and other contraband items at the time of the arrest.
