SLN foils another turmeric smuggling racket via sea
August 19, 2020- Amount of smuggled turmeric busted soars to 8,360 kilos
Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) nabbed 807 kilos of turmeric packed in 14 gunny sacks in two cases with four suspects along with two dingy boats during their attempts to smuggle into the country via Daluwa, Norochcholai and Vankalai in Mannar, yesterday (Aug 18).
Smugglers aged between 25 to 58-years old, residents of Kalpitiya area, were handed over to the Sri Lanka Custom offices in respective areas for investigations.
SLN thwarted two such turmeric smuggling attempts recently at the Western seas off Mannar, 1,000 kilos on July 28, 115 kilos on Aug 08, 6,381 kilos on Aug 11 and 57 kilos of turmeric on August 13.
SLN confirms both North-Western and North-Central Naval Commands are on high alert about the recent developments of turmeric smuggling into the country.
