Met Dept warns of heavy rain and strong winds

September 03, 2020

The Meteorology Department requests the public to be vigilant with a slight increase in rainfall due to the turbulent nature of the lower atmosphere around the island and likely increase of wind speed (60-70 kmph) during next 24-hours.

More than 150 mm of rain is expected in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central Provinces and in some places in the Galle and Matara districts. The North, North Central, North Western and Trincomalee districts will receive heavy showers of up to 100 mm, the Met Dept said.

It warns the public to take measures to minimize the damage caused by wind, flood and lightning.

Marine weather forecast also alerts naval and fishing communities and residents of coastal areas on likely increase of wind speed (up to 50-55 kmph) at times in the sea areas extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Puttalam, Colombo, Galle, Matara and Hambanthota.

Naval and fishing communities are requested to be vigilant.

Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Center (DMC) urges the public to take immediate action to protect their lives and property.

The public can contact the DMC dialing the hotline number 117 to inquire about possible disasters due to the prevailing weather conditions.
