September 06, 2020The fire on-board MT New Diamond was completely doused and the Sri Lanka Air Force tested dry chemical powder sacks brought successful results in smothering the rising flames, Navy said today (6).
Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) jointly with other stakeholders who involved in the fire fighting operation was able to douse the fire nearly after a 79-hour operation since distress was alarmed.
According to SLN, Indian Navy and salvage specialists will board the distressed vessel to inspect interior parts.
SLN says, flames may reappear owing to high temperature inside and environmental influences and therefore, SLN is on high alert throughout.
A team of 10 British and Netherlands experts, including Salvage Operations Experts, Assessors and a Legal Adviser also arrived in the island under the directives of the ship’s commercial and technical operator company, SLN also said.
SLN confirms it will continue to provide assistance to the distressed ship until it leaves the country’s Maritime Search and Rescue Region.
