NBRO issues landslide warning for five districts

Issuing a landslide early warning message yesterday 9.30 p.m. (6), the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has earmarked few areas in five districts as vulnerable to landslides due to prevailing weather conditions in the country.

Early warning has earmarked several regions in Colombo, Galle, Kalutara, Kegalle and Ratnapura districts for likely landslides, which is valid till 9.30 p.m. today (7).

Seethawaka Divisional Secretariat area in Colombo, Neluwa Divisional Secretariat in Galle, Palindanuwara and Bulathsinhala Divisional Secretariats in Kalutara, Ruwanwella, Kegalle, Yatiyanthota, Bulathkohupitiya, and Dehiowita in Kegalle and Eheliyagoda Divisional Secretariat in Ratnapura have been indicated under the ‘Level 2’ for potential risks.

Meanwhile, Padukka in Colombo, Nagoda, Elpitiya and Niyagama in Galle, Mathugama, Agalawatta, Walallawita, Ingiriya and Horana in Kalutara, Deraniyagala, Aranayake and Galigamuwa in Kegalle and Elapatha, Ratnapura, Kiriella, Kuruwita and Ayagama in Ratnapura district have been indicated under the category of ‘Level 1’ for potential risks.

NBRO also advises citizens to be vigilant on potential landslides, cracks on ground, deepened cracks, slanting of trees, sudden presence of springs, emerging muddy water and disappearances of existing water sources during the period.
