Sea breeze triggers flames on-board distressed vessel - SLN
September 08, 2020Adverse weather has triggered flames on-board MT New Diamond again, the Navy said.
Ships, aircraft and tugs belonging to Sri Lanka Navy (SLN), Sri Lanka Air Force, Indian Navy and Coast Guard and other related stakeholders are continuing their efforts to suppress the fire amidst adverse weather.
SLN said teams of salvage operation and disaster management arrived in the island have reached the distressed ship to support the on-going disaster management operations.
According to SLN sources, Indian Coast Guard Dornier Aircraft is expected to arrive in the island carrying a consignment of dry chemical powder.
SLN confirming neither risk of fire spreading into oil storage nor oil spill says research teams of National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency, Marine Environment Protection Authority and University of Ruhuna are expected to visit the scene to inspect water samples and marine environment.
