MEPA to commence diving operations to assess condition of MT New Diamond

September 11, 2020

Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) together with experts appointed for its salvage operation is now gearing for a diving operation to inspect the underneath hull condition of the ship, Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) Chairperson Darshani Lahandapura said today (11).

She told defence.lk, they will also consider towing possibility of the ill-fated vessel.

"Discussions on legal aspects were held with the Attorney General’s Department," Lahandapura  said.

The distressed vessel is currently located about 45 nautical miles off Point Kalmunai, Navy Spokesman Capt. Indika De Silva said short while ago.

Continuous operations are being conducted amidst rough sea conditions, he said.

SLN also says, ship's engine and pump rooms were flooded with sea water while stabling the ship on ‘trim by aft’ condition.

Meanwhile, Navy Commander Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne expressed his gratitude to the Commanding Officer, Indian Coast Guard Ship ‘Ameya’ during a visit at the Trincomalee harbour yesterday (10).
