SLN thwarts turmeric smuggling attempt via Mannar sea
September 17, 2020Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) nabbed two persons with 818 kilos of dried turmeric packed in 17 gunny sacks along with a dingy boat while attempting to smuggle the stocks into the country via north of Mannar, yesterday (Sep 16).
Smugglers aged 26 to 37-years are residents of Palleimunai in Mannar. They were handed over to the Public Health Inspector in Talaimannar for quarantine process under their custody and the seized items were handed over to the Sri Lanka Custom offices in Jaffna for further investigations.
Suspects and the haul of dried turmeric were nabbed in two separate sea operations by the North-Central Naval Command, SLN said.
SLN confirms both North-Western and North-Central Naval Commands are kept on high alert after the recent developments on turmeric smuggling racket into the country.
