Rough seas over Bengal Bay until Sept. 22
September 18, 2020Issuing a marine weather forecast, the Meteorology Department alerts naval and fishing communities on potential extreme weather conditions - very strong gusty winds, heavy showers, and rough or very rough seas over Central, Northeast and Eastern Bay of Bengal from today, (Sep 18).
Mentioning likely formation of low pressure over the Northeast Bay of Bengal on Sep 20, Met Department advises fishing communities to refrain from venturing into the seas of Bay of Bengal from Sep 19 to 22.
Met Department said showers and thundershowers may occur in several locations in the seas off coastline extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle.
It also stated that wind speed may increase up to 60 to 70 kmph in the deep and shallow seas off the coasts extending from Trincomalee to Negombo via Kankasanturai and in the seas extending from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
Wind speed may increase up to 50 to 55 kmph in the deep and shallow sea areas off the coast extending from Negombo to Matara via Southern parts, it said.
Seas extending from Trincomalee to Negombo via Northern coast and seas extending from Matara to Pottuvil via southern coast can be rough or very rough occasionally, it warned.
Sea areas off Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via southern parts may experience surges due to the effect of swell waves about 2.5 to 3 metres height.
Met. Department also advises those who are in deep seas to reach safer areas.
