Army rescues landslide victims at Buwelikada
September 20, 2020Army troops rescued three injured persons inside earth mounds after a landslide occurred at Buwelikada, Kandy today morning (20).
The Army said a five-storied building on a hillside at Buwelikada, Kandy has fallen on an adjoining house leaving its occupants trapped inside.
An infant recovered from those debris has died on admission to the Kandy General Hospital.
Information further confirmed that the landslide has also reportedly buried a few more persons, believed to be occupants of those affected houses.
Torrential rains and inclement weather that continued the last few days in Kandy area have led to soil erosion and landslides in and around hilly areas.
The Army said 2 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR), 10 Gajaba Regiment (GR) and Sri Lanka Rifle Corps (SLRC) troops of the 11 Division under the Security Force HQ - Central (SFHQ-Cen) are currently engaging in a massive search and rescue operation.
