Met Dept warns on showers and winds during next few days

October 10, 2020

The Meteorology Department informs the public on the temporary enhancement of windy and showery conditions over the island, particularly over the South-western parts during next few days from tonight, due to fairly active south-west monsoon.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-western provinces and in Galle and Matara districts.

Fairly heavy rainfalls exceeding 75mm are likely at some places in Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and in Galle and Matara districts.  Showers will occur at several places in the Northern province and Anuradhapura district.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at a few places in Eastern and Uva provinces in the afternoon or night. Strong gusty winds of about (50-60) kmph can be expected across the island.

The  Met Dept warns the public to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Marine weather forecast also alerts naval and fishing communities not to venture into sea area over north Andaman sea areas until 13th October due to the low pressure and  likely development of a depression.
