Special unit is established to avoid circulating of false information through social media
May 14, 2019There were few incidents of damaging shops has been reported in Kuliyapitiya area on last evening (12) and to control that situation police curfew was enforced in kuliyapitiya police division in last night(12). However, Again there were few incidents reported today (13) in the same area, Therefore to control the situation police curfew is enforced in North Western province for until further notice. Only the damages to properties were reported and no any casualties were happened or reported from these incidents, said the Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara during the press briefing held at the Media Centre in Kollupitiya, last evening (13).
Military Spokesman and Director of the Media Centre Brigadier Sumith Atapattu was also present at the briefing.
These incidents among the communities in the local areas will lead security forces to interrupt their security operations since troops have to be deployed to troubleshoot in these areas. False information circulate through social media is leading to incidents among the communities. Most recent example is the incident happened in the Chilaw. To avoid circulating of this false information there is a special unit established in police Headquarters. This unit will work with full effort to avoid of circulating of false information through the social media. Personal creating and circulating false information through social media can be sentenced 3 to 5 years imprisonment according to emergency law and up to 10 years imprisonment by civil and political international agreement, revealed the Police Spokesman.
Period to hand over explosives without legal permits to the Police will end by to 6 AM tomorrow (14). Police has revealed that the van that was exploded on 22 April by Special Task Forces that same van used to transport the suicide bomber to the Kochchikade church is registered under the name of the suicide bomber at the Kingsbury hotel. Through the investigations made by Criminal Investigation Department it is revealed that another suspect has been involved in this operation. His pencil drawing sketches will be telecast through media and public is requested to help the Police to identify this suspect, further stated the Police Spokesman.
