SLN nabs 40 suspects with illegal sea cucumber in recent operations

North Central and North-Western Naval Command led recent operation nabbed 40 persons with 2186 unlawfully harvested sea cucumber.

According to the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN), a haul of 1544 illegally harvested sea cucumber has been nabbed with five fishing vessels by the North Central Naval Command at Lokkannawadi beach in Walaipadu, Nachchikuda and Konthampiddi in Mannar recently.

These suspects nabbed have been identified as residents of Walaipadu in Mannar, Jaffna, Nachchikuda and Arippu aged between 19 to 58 years.

SLN also arrested 21 persons and five fishing boats with diving gear and fishing accessories during further investigations.

The SLN and Police led joint operation caught a haul of 63 boiled sea cucumber at the Thewampiddi area, Thunukkai in a similar recent operation.  

Meanwhile, North-Western Naval Command recently nabbed 19 suspects who had illegally harvested sea cucumber along the coastline from Kondachchikuda to Arippu. This operation nabbed 642 sea cucumbers, four dinghy boats and diving gears.

Arrestees with illegal harvests and fishing gears were handed over to the respective Fisheries Authorities and local Police for onward legal proceedings.

All the arrests were made following healthcare procedures, the SLN confirmed.
