SLN’s seaborne coverage nabs 5711 kilos of dried turmeric
November 08, 2020Seaborne coverage of Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) has nabbed 5711 kilos of dried turmeric with 6 suspects during their attempts to smuggle into the island on Nov 06.
Accordingly, 78 delivery bags of dried turmeric weighing over 3218 kilos were taken into custody during a North-Western Naval Command led seaborne operation while smuggled items were transferring to a local craft at the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) off the Kudiramalei Point.
Two Sri Lankans and four foreign nationals engaged in the racket were also taken into custody, SLN said.
Naval authorities also recovered concealed stockpiles of 1256 kilos of dried turmeric from Mohoththuwaram and 1237 kilos from Thudawa, Kalpitiya.
Two suspects nabbed were identified as residents of the Kalpitiya area, aged 26 and 28 years.
Overseas nationals involved in the racket have been repatriated to their original destination with their vessel to avoid the spreading of the Coronavirus, SLN said.
SLN said onward investigations into aforesaid incidents are currently underway and items with suspects were handed over to the respective Police authorities for legal proceedings.
