Met Dept warns on lightening and thundershowers in several areas

The Meteorology Department’s weather report today (Nov 09) issuing its statement requested the general public to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

The report warns that heavy showers about 100 mm can be expected at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, North-western and Central provinces. The showers or thundershowers will occur at several palces elsewhere after 2.00pm.

Further, the report says, misty conditions can be expected at some places in Central, Sabaragamuwa, Western and Uva provinces and in Galle and Matara districts during the morning. A few showers will occur in the coastal areas of Eastern and Northern provinces in the morning too,

Met. Department’s marine weather report forecasts that showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the Eastern and Northern sea areas.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the other sea areas around the island during evening or night.

Winds will be North-easterly in the sea areas around the island. Winds speed will be 25-35kmph. Wind speed can increase up to (40-50) kmph in the sea areas extending from Colombo to Trincomalee via Puttalam,  Mannar and  Kankasanturai.

Marine weather report also says The sea areas off the coast extending from  Colombo to Trincomalee  via Puttalam,  Mannar and  Kankasanturai  can be fairly rough at times. Other sea areas around the island will be slight to moderate.

Temporarily strong gusty winds (up to 70-80 kmph) and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers, the report added.
