Heavy showers above 100 mm expected in several areas - Met. Dept

The Meteorology Department’s weather report today (Nov 11) issuing its statement said showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in most parts of the island during afternoon or night while stating that showers will occur at several places in Northern and Eastern provinces and in coastal areas of Sothern province during the morning.

The report warns that heavy showers above 100 mm can be expected at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central and Northern provinces.

Therefore, the Met Department requested the general public to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Met. Department’s marine weather report forecasts that showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Northern and Southern sea areas to the island. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the other sea areas around the island during evening or night

Winds will be North-easterly in the sea areas extending from Galle to Trincomalee via Colombo, Mannar and Kankasanturai. Wind speed will be (30-40) kmph and can be increased up to 50 kmph at times. Winds will be variable in direction and wind speed will be (20-30) kmph in the other sea areas around the island, the  report added.

Marine weather report also says the sea areas extending from Galle to Kankasanturai via Colombo and Mannar can be fairly rough at times. Other sea areas around the island can be moderate.

Temporarily strong gusty winds (up to 70-80 kmph) and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
