Army inaugurates a 'Drone Regiment'

Sri Lanka (SL) Army formally raised its newest wing, 15th Drone Regiment of the Sri Lanka Artillery (SLA) yesterday (Nov 12) at the Army HQ,  with the auspices of its brainchild, Lt. Gen. Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence and Commander of the Army.

The Drone Regiment is well-equipped with high-tech cameras that enable operations within short & medium distances and quadcopters with observation cameras for surveillance purposes.

The Regiment would prepare the Army for the fast-changing technological advancements and new challenges.

Lt. Gen. Shavendra Silva  emphasized the value and technical importance of a regiment of this nature in the Army, considering emerging soft operation trends in war scenario, natural and man-made disasters, floods and other catastrophes, special emergency circumstances, chemical warfare, outbreak of community-infected epidemics, like COVID-19.

Following the observation of  the new Regiment’s Drones, Lt. Gen. Shavendra Silva launched the first Drone on a reconnaissance mission in the Army HQ complex area.

Director, Sri Lanka Institute of Nanotechnology, Mr Manju Gunawardane  and two representatives of DASIS Aerospace who supported to establish the new wing, Army officers and Other Ranks were present at the occasion.
