Met Dept warns on heavy showers above 100 mm in several areas

The Meteorology Department’s weather report today (Nov 14) issuing its statement said heavy showers above 100 mm can be expected at some places in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle and Matara districts.

Therefore, the general public is requested to take precautions to minimize damages caused by strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Showers may occur at several places in Northern, North-central and Eastern provinces. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere after 2.00 p.m.

Met. Department’s marine weather report forecasts that showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas around the island in the evening or night. Showers or thundershowers may occur in the Northern and Eastern sea areas in the morning too.

Winds will be North-easterly in the sea areas extending from Colombo to Pottuvil via Puttalam, Mannar, Kankasanturai and Trincomalee and variable in direction in the other sea areas around the island. Wind speed will be (20-30) kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 40 kmph in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Trincomalee via Puttalam, Mannar and Kankasanturai, the  report added.

Marine weather report also says the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Trincomalee via Puttalam, Mannar and Kankasanturai can be fairly rough at times. Other sea areas around the island can be slight to moderate.

Temporarily strong gusty winds (up to 70-80 kmph) and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
