Army troops in Kokkeliya repair burst tank bund and prevents a disaster

Troops of the Security Force HQ-Wanni repaired the burst Uthukkulam tank bund recently preventing a major disaster that could damage a vast patch of cultivations and remote villages.

Prevailing heavy rains increased the water level in the tank to spill levels and caused the sudden burst of the bund of about 15 ft in length, posing a grave threat to about 74 acres of cultivated fields and vegetable-growing chenas in low-lying areas.

The officials in the Nedunkerni Agrarian Services Department sought the assistance of the Army and  Kokkeliya based 7 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment troops of the 563 Brigade repaired the tank on Friday (13) averting a major disaster in the area.

On the guidelines and instructions of the Commander of the Security Forces-Wanni and the General Officer Commanding 56 Infantry Division, troops participated in the repair work, supported by a group of farmers and civilians in the area.

The Vavuniya District Secretary and the General Officer Commanding, 56 Division Major General Wasantha de Abrew inquired into the needs of the troops.
