Fairly heavy showers above 50mm is expected - Met Dept

The Meteorology Department’s weather report today (Nov 18) issuing its statement said showers or thundershowers will occur at several places over the most parts of the island in the afternoon or night.

Showers will occur in the Southern province and in coastal areas of Western province in the morning too.

Fairly heavy showers above 50mm can be expected at some places in Southern, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva provinces and in Kaluthara district.

Therefore, the general public is requested to take precautions to minimize damages caused by strong winds and lightning during thundershowers, the  report added.

Met. Department’s marine weather report forecasts that showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas extending from Kankasanthurei to Pothuvil via Puttalam, Colombo, Galle and Hambantota. A few showers may occur in the other sea ares around the island.

Winds will be South-westerly in the sea areas extending from Galle to Pothuvil via Matara and Hambantota. Winds will be Easterly or variable in direction in the other sea areas around the island. Wind speed will be (25-35) kmph.

Marine weather report also says the sea areas around the island can be slight to moderate.  

Temporarily strong gusty winds (up to 70-80 kmph) and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
