Met. Dept. warns on effects of the Cyclonic Storm “NIVAR”

The Cyclonic Storm “NIVAR” over southwest Bay of Bengal is intensified into a severe Cyclonic Storm and located near (10.1N, 82.1E) at 2330 hrs yesterday (24), 230 km to the east of Kankasanthurai coast, Meteorology Department stated today morning (Nov 25).

It is very likely to intensify into a very severe Cyclonic Storm and expected to move northwestwards and cross Tamil-Nadu coast, India during next 24hours.

Under the influence of this system, very strong gusty winds (60-80) kmph can be expected in Northern, Eastern and North-Central provinces. Strong gusty winds (40-50) kmph can be expected elsewhere.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Northern and North-Central provinces and Puttalam district. Fairly heavy falls above 75mm are likely at some places.

Intermittent showers/thundershowers, strong or very strong gusty winds and rough or very rough seas can be expected in the sea areas in between 08N-15N, 80E-90E during the next few days.

The sea areas extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Mannar, Kankasanthurai, Trincomalee and Batticaloa will be very rough or high at times. Naval and fishing communities are advised not to venture into these sea areas.

The sea areas   extending from Puttalam to Hambanthota via Colombo will be fairly rough at times. Naval and fishing communities are requested to be vigilant in this regard, the Met. Dept. report confirmed.
