BUREVI weakens further - Met Department

The Meteorology Department in its weather advisory report early this morning, (4 Dec) said the cyclonic storm ‘BUREVI’ has weakened into a Deep depression while locating about 143 kilometres towards the west-northwest of Mannar early morning today.

Met. Department says, the troublemaking cyclone is shifting further away from the country and therefore influence would be gradually reduced.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers will take place in the northern, north-central and north-western provinces occasionally.

Weather advisory report also says heavy rainfall above 100 mm can also be expected in some places of northern, north-western provinces and in Anuradhapura district.

According to the Met. Department Several spells of showers may take place in western, sabaragamuwa and central provinces and also in Galle and Matara districts.

The wind speed could be increase up to 40-50 kmph at times in northern, north-central and north-western, provinces, the announcement also said.

The marine weather report said, winds would be westerly to south-westerly in the seas extending from Puttalam to Mullaitivu via Mannar and Kankasanthurei and the wind speed would be 55-65 kmph. It may increase up to 75 kmph occasionally over the said sea areas.

Wind pattern would be south-westerly in the seas extending from Galle to Hambanthota via Mathara and the wind speed will be 30-40 kmph. Wind speed could be increased up to 50 kmph occasionally in these sea areas.

According to the marine weather forecast winds would be south-westerly or variable in the other sea areas around the island and the wind speed would be 30-40 kmph.
